Of course you would think it's normal to see a guy drinking bear and smoking. What if it's a girl who is doing sort of things?
I think male or female, they should have the freedom to choose what they want to wear to express their true self. People stereotyping others not only based on how they look but also what they do in their daily lives and their interests.
As we all have discussed in the round table before on the topic "Baby Storm", I found it's so true that people have the right to choose what they want to be as well as the way they want to express themselves.
It does not matter if girls are too boyish or guys are too girly, it does not matter if female want to learn martial arts and male want to learn ballet dance, it also does not matter if women are the one who making money and men stay home taking care of children because in the end, it's their lives not ours! We should not use our own knowledge or even what the society thinks is right to apply on everybody in this world.
QUESTIONS:
1. If you're not a homosexual and people think you are based on what you wear or how you act in daily lives, how would you feel?
2. Men and women, do you think we should judge them equally?
3. Do you think men have more disadvantaged than women in terms of stereotype or reverse?
In response to question 1, if I were in that situation, I would feel uncomfortable. I am being completely misjudged because of what I wear and how I act. I believe that its not the clothes that makes a person but, the person that makes the clothes. This means that clothing should not be the only factor determining a person's character. Choosing the type of clothes we wear is a way to make us happy and unique individuals.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you that clothing is not the only factor that determines a person's character. Anyhow, I don't think the person that makes the clothes is to "blame". In the end, it is a person's choice to wear it or not, and we as people should not judge them but respect their decisions. :)
DeleteThis is such a good post Mai! I have to agree with Kristina here, I'd also feel very uncomfortable because I am being shunned upon, because of the way I act and dress differently. I believe that people have the right to wear whatever they want because that is just a way people express themselves through clothing. and to answer your second question, i think both males and females should be treated equally the same as everyone else even if they dress differently then others.
ReplyDeleteThank you Erica :) I would like to share with you one of my personal experiences is that before, I used to wear clothes kind of boyish. I don't think that's a problem at all but as soon as a friend told me that I'm not as girly as I'm supposed to be, I actually started to change. At least, I think being girly is not a bad thing at all :)
DeleteIn response to question 3, if a woman wears a man's clothes it is considered normal. But if a man wears a woman's clothes he is considered effeminate, i think this is due to society being dominated by males for so long that some standards just do not go away. But other stereotypes where men can't be cooks are in the process of going away. So no one really had the disadvantage here, it is more about the evolution of society.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post Mai! In response to question 2 I think men and women should be judged equally as women get more stereotypes than men and I believe that it is unfair for women. However, unfortunately women still do not have equal rights and therefore it can be said that even in the future women will be continued to judged and discriminated by media. As sad as it may be, its hard enough to say that women will not be judged more than men in the future.
ReplyDeleteto start off i want to point out where you said, "Of course you would think it's normal to see a guy drinking bear and smoking." this is a common stereotype that men are supposed to drink and smoke but women should not. and for the first question i would feel uncomfortable because of some ones prejudice accusations. of course!! i believe that we are all equal and no one is better then anyone and we should all be judged the same. i think that there are a equal amount or stereotypes both ways, male or female, they'll catch up with you. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis actually happened a few times. I got a bit offended i wont lie because I'm straight and that was a mis representation of identity. They definitely should but it'll take some time before that happens. Men had a large advantage for quite some time. These past few years though, the feminism movement, has allowed women to make large progress and they have and are gaining many advantages over men.
ReplyDeleteTo answer question 1, I think people mainly judge based on how you act rather than what you wear. That's not to say that your clothes don't make you a target for harsh judgement, but I do think that personality and actions take precedent in terms of how other view you and judge you.
ReplyDeleteTo comment on the rest of your post, it's all a matter of double standards, which are pretty iffy, not quite sure how one would go about fixing that without changing the dominant discourse.
I believe that males and females should be judge equally. In the society that we live in its okay to express yourself. Rather you are a guy dressing like a girl or the opposite. It's your life and your choices and you shouldn't be judged differently. Media has made it possible for males and females to be judged equally.
ReplyDeleteI believe that men and women should both be judged equally. However, it is very difficult because when a man wears clothing made for girls they are bombarded with insults but usually when a women does it, they don't get much insults. I think it'll be very difficult fot everyone to believe in equality between men and women but hopefully we get there some day. Nice post !Mai
