Special thanks to Urban Dictionary to provide me with these general stereotypes.
Let's get to the main point of this blog. The media texts that we consume daily has provided us with all sorts of stereotypes. These stereotypes range from the Whites to Blacks to Jews to Mexicans to Asians and so on. I believe that these stereotypes that exist currently are reshaping the way we think about and act around certain types of people. This includes the stereotype that all black people are dangerous and that you should always should be on alert because something dangerous might occur. Another example can be that if you ever need help in math, the Asian community is open to help you with your math problems which includes graphing functions and solving equations like this f(x)=3log5^3.
Please watch this video and get a general sense of the ridiculous stereotypes that we are being surrounded with currently. Isn't it ridiculous? This YouTube video can be deconstructed and examined even more. Take for example when the guy in the video says, "Let's get together like the unibrow of an Indian girl". Isn't that racist and rude. This video really displays the stereotypes that we are faced with currently. People think that every Indian girl is hairy and has a unibrow but that is wrong. Media texts have taken stereotypes to the extreme and it should not be like that. Another stereotype is that all Russian's drink alcoholic for breakfast. I know a few Russians and they do not drink alcohol for breakfast.
I believe that these stereotypes that are presented in this video are definitely not true. All sorts of media texts have embedded into the mind of the viewers these racial stereotypes. When you think of an England dude, what immediately comes to your mind? I bet a guy who has messed up teeth and a bad breath. Regardless if these stereotypes are not true we should not forget that people can get offended.
The only people to blame for this is the media producers. These producers have really inputted their beliefs and values into their ads. This can be seen in commercials, films, ads, websites and on the television. Likewise, I believe that the dominant discourse too has influenced the stereotypes that currently exist in our society. The socializing influences have shaped our ideas, perceptions and behaviours around certain race and ethnicity groups. Stereotypes can be funny to some people but in the end of the day someone that is being stereotyped will get offended. Some of these stereotypes in the video are kind of funny but seriously these stereotypes have to stop and it will begin with you!
Okay let's take a step back and let's focus on how mothers are stereotyped too. The media has stereotyped mothers that they are housewifes, cookers, cleaners and soccer moms. These stereotypes might be true but not every mother falls into those categories because some mothers are the complete opposite. Likewise, you have fathers that are categorized into those stereotypes. Once again media texts and its ability to reshape the mind of many has done its job successfully. I believe that these stereotypes will be part of our lives for a long time.
Stereotypes have had many purposes. One of which is to advertise certain consumer goods and services. An example portraying this is a model from H&M. The models are stereotyped to look caucasian, tall, handsome and really fit. Though stereotypes are not just used for business purposes they are also used for entertainment. We have seen in many films, ads, television programs and comedians use stereotypes to their advantage. I believe that comedians have returned to the stereotypical jokes because quite frankly they are funny. The ordinary life is boring and by making stereotypical jokes it just entertains many people. Obviously there are the negative effects of stereotypical jokes but if you were to look at it through a neutral-ethnicity/gender/sexuality/religion lens then it will be okay.

Discussion questions:
Do you think that the dominant discourse has taken a huge toll on stereotypes?
Why would the media that we consume present all these types of stereotypes?
How would you feel if you were stereotyped?
How would these stereotypes disappear once in for all?
Why are some stereotypes used for business purposes?

Great post Endrit, and yes dominant discourse has taken stereotypes to such a whole new level, that when i was reading through the list i stopped and thought to myself "but isnt that true?" the media presents these stereotypes to advertise things such as tv shows and movies to make money. i dont feel that bad but i do feel, and know that they are lies and i honestly find them entertaining. i dont think that these stereotypes will ever disappear, i think they are too commonly used to be vanished once in for all.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Mr. Hamed. Media uses stereotypes as a way to advertise their products. It can range from selling Jordans to selling a dry cleaner. Also, I agree with you on the entertaining part. I do find all the stereotypes funny and entertaining but I do not support them. Though I think media has gone too far with stereotyping. The hope of diminishing the stereotypes is really difficult in the society we are currently living in.
Delete@Belal, i was thinking the same thing while i was reading the list, and thought that it is true and the truth about today's society. However, if we all continue to go like this we will all end up discriminating and putting each other down. There should be an end to this. You are right about the slurs and stereotypes being common in today's dominant discourse society, but the world needs to have tolerance and peace in it, or else there might be a time where we may not be able to even accept each other. If we can't totally erase these stereotypes we can at least reduce them and resist bullying and calling person names and joining them with a specific stereotype
DeleteGreat comment Bilal. I believe that the stereotypes that currently exist have really reshaped our minds. I think that stereotypes nowadays seem to be normal. I think that has happened because we are constantly bombarded with all sorties of media portraying multiple stereotypes. Likewise, I agree with you that we must change this be reducing the name calling and bullying.
DeleteYes Id agree with question one. The media tends to over exaggerate stereotypes alot. It has definitely risen to new heights though recently. I believe it portrays all these stereotypes because some may remnants or preparations of war/exploitation. Oppressive countries and rulers, use propaganda to demonize and humiliate the ones they seek to attack. America has had a long history of that and alot of the stereotypes are just lasting propaganda that is still believed and broadcasted to this day. Well being Afghan, I'm stereotyped often. Sadly i dont think much of it, considering its occured so much I've been desensitized to it. Will it ever dissapear? I highly doubt it will. But I'm a bit more than sure, we'll die before we see that day.
ReplyDeleteGreat comment Akber. I totally agree with you. Countries and rulers are using stereotypes to try and diminish their enemies. I believe many countries and rulers have used the stereotyping method in their favour and it has affected a lot of people. Also, I agree with you on that we will never see the day of stereotypes changing. Do you think that if we as a nation were to protest and petition against stereotypes will resolve the situation? I know media can play a big part if they are on our sides!
DeleteI think the cause for stereotypes in the past has been the ignorance of people but now it is the advertisers and marketers. If there wasn't a certain standard the media has set for men and women, many designer products would not be sold. People wouldn't buy Dolce and Gabanna if there was an average looking man and a moderately attractive woman wearing their products.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Ramoos. Just like what I said earlier that stereotypes can be used for advertisement purposes. An example, is the selling of Jordans shoes. You would have a black male that is a famous basketball player advertising the shoe.
DeleteIn response to the question "How would you feel if you were stereotyped?" of your, I probably would feel a bit uneasy because honestly, I'm not very good at Math although I'm Asian as you know. I don't think the society should have these stereotypes in the beginning for people because NOT ALL people are the same as you see.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you because we are being stereotype for something that me or you aren't. I believe that what society and media have done is completely disgusting and unneeded. Likewise, I said that many media outlets use stereotyping as a way to generate profit.
DeleteI personally think that these stereotypes have gone too far in our society, and the worst part is it has become a dominant discourse where people use these terms to make fun of one another. The media that we consume today contains all types of stereotypes, in fact it was said that out of the top 10 racist medias in our society , FOX news was ranked 1 of the 10. We see that there is something wrong with out media today since it has affected the way youths interpret information. Yet if we want to reverse this whole idea of stereotyping, we must stop it from its source, which is media itself.
ReplyDeleteGreat comment Kulvir. I totally agree with you. I believe that stereotypes have affected everyone and has taken a wrong turn. Moreover, I believe our society has changed so much that changing the perceptions and behaviours around certain people and ethnicities will be quite frankly difficult. Are there any particular stereotypes that are really bad Kulvir?
