Double Take has made a genuine effort to portray the dilemmas faced by hot girls everyday. Hot girls are just like us except that they are hot, the poetry in their words is almost Shakespearean. Being perfect means that you get phone calls from weird guys and girls calling you names, these girls need your sympathy people. They contradict themselves many times throughout the video, they cannot decide whether they are perfect, textbook perfection or not perfect. We have been looking at hot girls and thinking that they have no problems because they look nice but Double Take has made a revelation with this video.
Now on a less condescending note, this song is not borderline offensive, it raises the bar for insensitive music. The lyrics are degrading to insecure girls and some boys, and the music video is an asinine individual's attempt at something pretentious. If boy bands have taught us anything, its that a very high number of teenage girls who are insecure about how they look. This song is a big "f*** you"(couldn't find a better way to put it) to those girls. This implied message this song sends is that your looks are proportional to your happiness. And it is also implied that guys who don't look to a certain standard are 'weird' for messaging them. The problems these girls have make first world problems seem like monstrous catastrophes.
1. Do you think the problems that these girls are talking about are real 'problems'?
2. In your view where does this song cross the boundary from arrogant to asinine?
3. Do any of the things these girls say hold true in reality? (Think about this one)
I'd like to answer you first question by saying that I think the only problem that they mention that would be a real problem is when people call "hot" or pretty girls names that are uncalled for. Especially when we consider western fashion where girls who dress in more revealing clothing are considered hot at the same time that they are considered sluts. This is a real problem because it confuses girls since these are two very opposite opinions about one type of appearance. This makes it very difficult for girls to find a balance to their image.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these girls are talking about the truth. Every girl has problems in many different ways. In this case, these girls are just "Hot". I think that media wants teenage girls to dress half naked but when they do, they get called a "slut". This is confusing for teenage girls that want to adopt to what society thinks they should act like but that immediately backfires and they get blamed for it. Dominant discourse has done its job effectively by making teenagers life difficult. Likewise, every girl has their problems either hot or not hot.
ReplyDeleteI believe these girls are genius. They are making a mockery of the problems hot girls face because it is clear to see, they are not hot at all. Whether they are attractive in real life is not important. In the video they dress themselves and dance in a very unattractive manner. They even put the icing on the cake by forcing a terribly pitched squeal and pass it as singing. The only downside to this video is that we do not know if their lyrics hold any actual weight. We must obtain the opinion of a real hot girl, rather than mine yours or theirs, because me and you are not females and those girls are not hot.
ReplyDeleteJust... LOLLL. That's an interesting point to make that they are just mocking hot girls. I legitimately thought that THEY THOUGHT they were hot and could sing well.
DeleteThough, I do still think that their lyrics are still partially true. Some of the problems that they state actually apply to all girls. Because of the way that teenage girls are viewed through the media, there will always be two opposite opinions about girls because half of media portray girls as positive for doing something while the other half will immediately find something negative about it. (Oh she's a prude/Oh she's a slut)
I am definitely giving them the benefit of the doubt here because if they are that arrogant, I'd lose quite a lot of faith in humanity. So looking at it from my perspective I can actually appreciate their, "music". Your point is completely true. Society puts a double standard on women where they are forced to be extremely sexy and attractive, while also being, "lady-like". That is a really unrealistic standard to hold women to is definitely one of society's, "Hot Problems".
DeleteThis song track is pretty bad. To answer the first question, i think today's female teenagers who admit they are beautiful and hot have no problem what so ever since they are fully secure and have full confidence. Yet, another good comment made by Mr. Dina, that if they dress good and they are pretty people call them, "sluts", that is correct but many time it is the case that girls don't care what you say about them. To answer the first question, i would like to say that in my opinion these are not really real problems that girls care about as long they think they are good looking they are confident of their looks and appearances.
ReplyDeleteTo question three, I believe that some of the things these girl says on their video holds some truth to how stereotypical "hot girls" are suppose to be. In society, the media has portrayed how a hot female should look, such as having long hair, money and and thing that helps them seem close to perfect. Also i completely agree with you Waleed, that these girls are contradicting to some of the things they say and makes me wonder how a perfect female really appear?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I believe that media is actually shaping our belief and telling us what is right and wrong. In other words, you see many magazines and movies where females are slim, have money and look good. These are messages that are being send to other girls which state that this is how a girl is suppose to look like. Therefore by incorporating all this information, a low self esteemed person will feel degraded and that their not as good as others. However, females do not always have to incorporate the information they consume. For instance, many woman have high self esteem and hopes since some tend not to compare themselves to the models they see on TV and magazines. In all, we should be proud of who we are rather than think about how we look.
ReplyDeleteYou contradicted yourself there a bit, you know you can speak normally on the blog. This song is in a way about being proud of how you look but it is arrogant and bashful of others.
